The
creative achievements of Native American artists and craftsmen of the
United States are displayed at the Museum of the Plains Indians in Browning,
Montana. Open year round, a permanent exhibit presents the diversity
of historic arts of the tribal peoples of the Northern Plains and two
special exhibition galleries are devoted to changing presentations promoting
the creative works of outstanding talented contemporary artists and craftsmen.
The museum was founded
in 1941 and is administered by the Indian Arts and Crafts Board, an independent
Federal agency located in the Department of Interior. Its purpose is to
promote the development of contemporary Indian arts of the United States.
The
museum's sales shop offers a wide variety of authentic, contemporary Indian
arts and crafts products. A series of promotional sales exhibitions introduces
unsurpassed contemporary American Indian arts and crafts by emerging artists
and crafts-persons. The Northern Plains Indian Crafts Association,
an independent Indian-owned business, operates it.
During the summer months
(June - September), the museum is opened from 9 AM to 4:45 PM daily. From
October throughout May, it is open from 10 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through
Friday. The museum is located on U.S. Highway 89 on the west edge
of Browning. Admission to the museum is free.
