Captain Meriwether Lewis followed the North Branch of the Marias River
(now known as the Cut Bank Creek), and camped at this location on
Monday July 21, 1806. There was no timber to be found so they made a
fire out of Buffalo chips. They were nearly out of provisions, wounded a
Buffalo, but were not able to retrieve it. The following day they proceeded
on to Camp Disappointment.
